Hamilton Island & The Whitsundays

As you descend the stairs from the plane on the Hamilton Island runway, you instantly feel like you’ve landed in paradise.  Nothing beats leaving air plane air conditioning and having warm, salty ocean air wash over you.  The small airport is open to the outdoors and baggage claim has views of the ocean.

We spent our last week in Australia on Hamilton Island and it was amazing.  The island which is part of the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland is truly a paradise with beautiful scenery at every turn, and although Scott and I weren’t alive at the time we imagine it to be somewhat like Waikiki Beach in the 1950’s.  There’s plenty to do on the island, yet somehow it seems untouched and undeveloped which is a rarity and so very peaceful.  There are no cars on the island aside from those of the maintenance and service crews, so you get around by “buggie” or as we Americans know them – golf carts.

The Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Australia was a fun detour out of Sydney.  If you missed my Guide to Sydney, make sure to check it out.  To get to Hunter Valley we rented a car, which for us Americans was an adventure in itself with driving on the opposite side of the road and the driver sitting on the right side of the car.  Scott and I did end up on the wrong side of the road more than once, but we made it safe and sound to Lovedale, which is situated in the Hunter Valley – a region renowned for it’s wine.  So we knew we had to visit when we booked our flight to Sydney!

We recently went on an Australian adventure and our first stop was Sydney.  After the longest flight of my life (15 hours from LAX), we arrived in Sydney two days after our departure from Denver and at 6:30 am local time.  We threw jet lag to the wind and were ready to explore!

We stayed at the Pier One Marriott which is just under the Sydney Harbor Bridge and in a great location to explore all of the city’s major landmarks.  On our first morning, we walked along the water with Luna Park across the harbor, headed to see the Opera House and in search of caffeine!

Gingham Maxi in Mantoloking, NJ

Mantoloking (7)

We ventured to the Jersey Shore for the wedding of one of my dear college girlfriends.  The Jersey Shore definitely gets a bad wrap (think the infamous “tan, gym, laundry” routine thanks to the reality TV show), but Mantoloking the sleepy little beach town where we visited was absolutely gorgeous and so serene!

I cannot get over the hydrangeas!  They were heavenly!  My girlfriends and I could not stop commenting on the abundance of hydrangeas, the variation of colors and the pristine landscaping.  It was definitely enviable.

The gingham maxi dress I wore was the perfect amount of formality and prep.  The thin criss-cross straps tie beautifully in the back and the skirt is the perfect amount of pouf with a layer of crinoline underneath.  It was a dream to wear and to dance the night away in under the white tent of the reception, which was located in a boatyard.  Sidenote:  The bride and groom made their entrance on a boat, which was pretty much the cutest thing ever and perfect for a coastal wedding.  It was stunning!

Unfortunately, my dress currently out of stock online, but J.Crew has some other really cute options that are pretty similar.  Scope out this tiered maxi dress in blue and white stripes (which I almost bought in place of the one I wore), this cotton-poplin maxi that preppy dreams are made of, and this gingham ball skirt which would be oh so fun to mix and match with varying tops.  I also love this gingham midi dress with eyelet accents. And for more gingham goodness check out this splurge worthy silk gingham maxi my DVF and this deal of a gingham maxi with contrasting trim by ASOS.  All super cute styles sure to rival any Lilly Pulitzer ensembles you may encounter on the east coast!

Mantoloking (13)

While in Mantoloking we enjoyed our fair share of seafood.  We arrived at our first stop the second we pulled into Point Pleasant at the Shrimp Box where we sipped rose overlooking the harbor.  Then soon there after followed it with a delicious Italian dinner at Theresa’s South in Bay Head.  I would highly recommend the pappardelle with lobster.  And since we don’t have it in Denver, the novelty of BYOB isn’t lost on me.  When we asked for the wine list we were surprised when she said that we could walk across the street to the conveniently located liquor store to bring in our own wine.  Again, how do we get BYOB in Colorado?!

Our trip also included lots of time on the water.  Sunset drinks on the shore with the bride’s friend Mary who started her own wine label, Ripe Life Wines.  I definitely need to stock some of their Clambake chardonnay at home, as seen on my Instagram!  One day we rented a pontoon boat and putzed around the bay while the boys crabbed.  (See what they caught above!)  We even had a recovery beach day beach day after the wedding before we headed to the airport.

I’m so happy that we had a fun-filled weekend reuniting with my KU girls, celebrating and amazing couple with their friends and family and I got my toes in the sand, something that’s on my list of resolutions each year!

Happy Friday everyone!  I hope you have a great weekend!

We took the baby on his first flight to Arizona!  We decided to visit Scott’s family in Phoenix and thought that the short 1 hour and 10 minute flight was perfect for Carter’s first aerial adventure.

We continued our Pacific Coast Highway Road Trip from Big Sur, through Pismo Beach, to Santa Barbara and onto Santa Monica.  Whenever possible we opted to drive along the coast even if it wasn’t the quickest route.  Who else thinks that Google Maps needs a scenic route option!?

Scott and I took some time before the baby comes to drive down the Pacific Coast Highway from San Jose to L.A.  We logged 530 miles in our rental car and made some amazing stops along the way.  The first leg from Monterey to Big Sur was one of my favorites.

A Weekend in NYC

NYC (8)This past weekend, Scott and I spent a long weekend in New York City.  We’re lucky enough to have friends who live in the city and they always show us a good time, taking us to historical bars, hip restaurants and recommending fun tourist activities a little off the beaten path.  For those without friends in NYC, here’s my long-weekend guide to New York City.
